does my african grey need toys to be happy?

Fermin Tara: maybe not, you just need to spend as much time as possible with your african grey, or maybe you could give tissue rolls for him/her to play with, they love those.

Buster Buchko: Of course he does. All birds need something to do when your not there to play with them. Mine is scared of most new toys, but she does have a few she really likes. They need their toys to fight boredom. They are very smart birds, I'm always amazed at some of the things she comes up with.If they don't have toys to play with they can find things on their own. You just won't like what they find. They'll find woodwork, power cords, and of course the will find feather plucking. This is all stuff you can prevent by paying attention to their needs. Such as their need for toys.Even if you can't afford the cost of toys, and some of them cost an arm and a leg. You can always make your own. That's what I do, I have a couple of Cockatoos that love to chew up wood. We buy 2x4s and cut them u! p and make our own toys for them. It really does save a lot of money. But for my Grey she does not seem to like wood toys.So she always seemed to like the dogs tennis ball. I got her a new tennis ball I cut a slit in the top and bottom. Passed a cotton rope through the slits, and tied a knot in the rope so it could not pass back through. Then I hung in her cage, she'll grab it pull it to the side of the cage and jump off and goes swinging. She really likes it, and it was cheap. They don't need the big costly toys, the ones you make at home with love are the best.Another way to save money on toys are to by old baby toys at yard sales. I buy the old baby rattles for my Goffin, he loves them. Just don't buy the ones filled with gel for teething. They also like the stuffed toys, they like to pull the stuffing out.So yes they really do need the toys for their own well being. You've got a really smart bird, don't let him waste it all on bad habits. Good Luck, with your Grey. I ho! pe this helps....Show more

Billie Bratchett: Of course! ! He will start plucking if he doesn't. All birds -- especially large birds, need toys for stimulation and something to do. He will need at least 5 toys. You should change 1 every week, or change them all every 3-4 weeks. You should have research and known this before you got him. He should also have a large cage, about this size:http://birdcages4less.com/page/B/PROD/Large_Bird_C...Here's a good site for all bird supplies:http://www.birdcages4less.com/...Show more

Willetta Munhall: Yes many different ones that need to be changed often. These birds are very smart and get bored very easy and can become neurotic. Which means can start feather plucking and screaming. I suggest many wood toys as they keep beak in shape and give bird something to do. Also love the foot toys. I also suggest leaving a radio or t.v. on throughout the day if possible.

Jerrod Guilfoil: yep i own a african grey and he needs toys else he will start plucking go online or in a petshop to have a l! ook at them, you can get all different kinds of materials so she can pull apart and play with and its good to put wooden perches in his cage different wood types (but some are dangerous)they need different kind of wooden perches for there claws and you can have upto 5-7 toys in your african grey's cage, he will have lots of fun playing with them, make sure you get him some toys, it will stop him from being bored and plucking himself!http://www.mdvaden.com/bird_page.shtml^^^thats a good link explains to you what wood you can and cannot use for your grey!...Show more
